Databending is the creative misuse of digital information. The term was named after circuit-bending, which is the creative misuse of electronic circuitry.

Because all digital information is ultimately stored as binary data (a series of 1's and 0's), it is often possible to "trick" a software application that was intended to work with one type of data into opening file types that it was not designed to work with. This concept can be used in varying ways to create databent media.

Popular forms of databending include sonification (creating audio from data), reinterpreting data into other media formats, editing data using an "incorrect" application (audio and text editors are common choices), datamoshing (a technique for creating glitch video), and using programs such as hex editors in order to introduce glitches into the data.
